1955 - Columbian - Calvert Football

How many of you remember this game. How many of you were there?

click on link above to read about this game. This is from Stephen J. Hartzell's web site "Tiffin - Seneca History Notebook" that has a lot of great reading and info on the history of our area including Indian Life that I find very interesting.

After reading this I had thoughts about how maybe we could combine the schools for athletics to create more understanding and make Tiffin a reall powerhouse to be reckoned with State and maybe even Nation wide. I know it wouldn't be easy at all, but this may benefit the city as far as jobs etc.
Something to think about?

MAR GE NE

I just got an email from someone who graduated from Columbian in '78 and she was asking what was Mar ge ne? I tried to explain to here and gave her the link to our class site, I sure wish that more of you would come up with some photos and more stories. I asked on the web site some time ago and got some responses, but not as much as I wanted, so here I am again asking for you guys to contribute and interact with this blog. I know that some don't feel computer literate enough but if you can send an email or a regular letter in the mail I can do the rest. I can scan your photos and return them on a CD also if you like. Please let's share more on everything about the school days or even local and family events that you think would be of interest. You know my eyes are starting to get worse with that ARMD, so I don't know how much longer I can do this. I'll keep going , but you guys will have to forgive the spelling errors etc. that I may make.
SO COME ON FOLKS LET'S SEE SOME PHOTOS AND STORIES OF OUR FAVORITE PLACE TO MEET AND HANG OUT BACK IN THE 50'. I'M SURE YOU WILL REALLY BRING SOME SMILES AND HEART FELT MEMORIES TO MANY.

Still racing at 71

Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks
2.
Art Ball from Tiffin, Ohio. The all-time feature winner at Fremont showed no signs of slowing up in his 48th year of racing. The 71-year-old competed in all 14 A-mains posting an incredible 11 top 5 finishes. Take out a pair of 20th place finishes and an 18th place run, and the worst Art finished in a feature was eighth. He opened the season strong, not finishing out of the top three from April 18 through June 6. Ball scored a win on opening night and had three runner-up runs and five third place showings. His average A-main finishing position was 6th.

This name sure sound familiat to me, does anyone know this man? Let me know.

TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING

This girl has serious problems. Can you imagine anyone acting like this in our day? I'm shocked that they allow this kind of thing to continue. Shocking? Yes! , at least it is to me.

I thought that this would fit into our school blog in a category of "How things have changed" from our days.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Now I don't happen to believe in this kind of stuff....well almost don't believe. This YOUTUBE clip has some great shots of out beloved movie house.
Maybe you can remember the Fright Nights we use to have there. I sure remember them and then the walk home when every shadow became a monster. Did you ever notice how a No Parking signs shadow looks like Frankenstien? Remember now he had a square head.
The funniest thing I remember from the show (now it's funny, but not then) was when I got real scared I climbed under the seat and just then the guy on stage said " No use climbing under your seat there are snakes on the floor" .
Anyway we had good times in this place. My first date was there. I'm sure you all have stories to tell also.
I thought I would include a link to the AT article from today about the RITZ too in case you didn't see it. '

Now on the other hand I DO REMEMBER HOW MUCH FUN IT WAS TO BE YOUNG! Was we a bit more reserved ?? At times maybe, but it makes me smile to see these kids having so much fun and zest for life.

MEMORY ? ?

Can anyone out there relate to this song? I bet you can, I sure enough do.

FOSTORIA / STEAM ENGINE TRAINS

I found this while browsing the web for things of the 50's. Now I'm not a train nut but I sure love those old steam engine sounds. I grew up less than a block from the tracks by the Smith Coal and Ice Co. and still love the sound of the trains blowing their whistle. Maybe you love that sound too. Click on the YouTube video here and maybe you want to just close your eyes and listen to the sound?

HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY TO CLASS OF 1957

At the top is a photo I found on line of the Stainless Steel egg in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago.
Below that is the group from the class of 1957 that took the trip to celebrate their 70th birthdays.
Ed Mathias emailed me the photo and the letter below. I added the seal of Chicago to the photo thinking it would be a nice addition.

“Sarj,
As you know a few of us got together in Chicago to celebrate our 70th birthdays. Here we are under the big stainless egg in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago. Had a great time.
If you can't recognize everybody send me a note and I'll enumerate.
Ed”

Yes Ed send the name info and I will try to tag the photo so when you pass a mouse over the images the name of the person will appear. I know most of them but to be safe send the names in order.
Thanks Ed

HOT SUMMER

I thought that since everyone in Tiffin has been telling me how Hot it is lately I would send you a video of Snow pictures I took over a couple of trips to Tiffin and some that friends sent me. The first photos are of Jim Wade's house during a blizzard a couple of years back. The next photos are of the house I grew up in on Franklin St. Then some of my second home, when I am visiting and that is Bob and Barb Bauer's house where the fron bedroom is called "The Bloom Room" because that's where I stay when I visit. The rest are just random houses that I took one day while driving around and the last is the windshield fo my car. DID THIS COOL YOU OFF? ARE YOU READY FOR WINTER YET? NOT YET YOU SAY!

OLD HOUSE IN TIFFIN

Vivian Blankenship sent these photos to me last year. It is an old house in Tiffin. I forget the location but maybe Vivian will tell us. Anyway I love buildings and old ones are a favorite too. Notice the brick street in front? Remember when all the streets were brick? Although I don't remembeer this particular house I do remember ones similar to it and it's part of my memories of Tiffin.
Vivian wrote back and said th house has been torn down now and it's only a vacant lot with weeds on the corner of Madison and Front streets.
thanks Viv

"THE HOOD"

'

This is the neighbor hood of my youth. I roamed all the alleys and streets. I had friends to play games with and neighbor hood parents that you could go to for help if no one was home. I have great memories of the games we played. The accidents that happened and of course some of the dumb things we did as children. It was a good time to be a kid and as I look at this photo my memories take me back to those wonderful days of youth.
The house I grew up in is the third house in from Hall St. Good Ole' 245 Franklin St. see photo above.

JUST A NOTE

Thanks to all of you that view the blog. Hopefully you will begin to leave comments or send in your stories and photos to shave with our friends from Old Columbian High.

FAMILY PRIDE

July 23 my grandson Vincent Tozzolo graduated from the U.S. Army Boot Camp at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA. My wife Jan and I drove up and stayed overnight to see the event. My daughter-in-law Mary Bloom and her children Richard, Julia and Olivia also made the trip and of course Vinny's parents and two sisters. So in all I had half of my grandchildren in one place which was great.

Vinny has really made this family proud, not just for joining the Army, but for the decisions he has made to take control of his life and set goals. I won't go into all the details but he made the choice to go back to school and get his HS diploma and then decided to join the Army to get the training and more education that will give him a good career. These are not easy decisions for a young man. Making such a commitment shows character that is missing in a lot of men today. I really don't know how to explain it but maybe you all know what I'm talking about.

Aside from the pride of seeing Vinny graduate and set off on his path to success I also got a sense from seeing all those fine young men that were also choosing to serve their country. If you watch the news today and hear some of the comments about our service men you may get the impression that not every things is well with our country. Well if you get the chance to wittiness a graduation ceremony or visit a military base you will come back with the impression that "All is Well" and our young men are just as brave, true and loyal as ever. I know because my grandson is one of them.

SENECA COUNTY FAIR

Hurry, Hurry Step right up. There’s only a few days left of FUN at the Seneca County Fair. I’ve enclose 3 links to sites about the fair. The first is a Quick Time movie of the rides taken in 1957. Anyone remember that year? The next on is the official Seneca County Fair site and the last is an article in the A/T newspaper about a new enteraninment center.

http://homepage.mac.com/nam65/forlawfulcarnivalkno/iMovieTheater160.html

http://www.senecacountyfair.org/

http://www.advertiser-tribune.com/page/category.detail/nav/5179/Seneca-County-Fair-Guide.html

Last of all once again I would like to suggest and idea that I had several years ago. I think that the Alumni Association or someone should rent a small spot in one of the buildings or a kiosk to promote the Association and help fun scholarships etc. It would be ONE place that everyone knows and they would know the date too, since it is always on the last week of July. Say someone can not make and August reunion but wants to catch up with news, address’s etc., or to leave their new address. Does anyone out there agree? Also is anyone out there? My site numbers indicate someone is visiting the blog besides me. WHO ARE YOU?
One more small note, please forgive my spelling etc. my eyes are slowly going ARMD it makes it hard even to see what spell check is saying. Oh well at least I can’t see any wrinkles on my face.

PART TIME WORK

I'm sure that many of us work part-time to keep busy and make a little money. I've worked at a local golf course for almost 5 years now. I have met a lot of friends there and have a lot of golf partners now. I work 2 mornings a week and sometimes fill in for someone on vacation or sick. The hours are good: seven am till 1pm and except for the summer busy is slow and I feel like the Maytag repair man.

When things are slow I have the golf course cat "Dudley" to keep me company. He is very affectionate. Everyone spoils him by bringing treats and petting him. He has got it made.

Now everything about the job is great except for one little detail: I hate the uniform I have to wear! Do you think it makes me look good, or silly?

see photo of my buddy Dudley and my uniform hat. (not really) You know you can send me stuff like this to publish also.....come on now!

August in Tiffin

August in Tiffin is always full of things to do and people to see. First of all there are school class reunions and there are a couple this August including class of 1954 and 1959. Go to the Alumni site for more details http://www.tc-alumni.org/2009%20Reunions.html

I know a lot of my good friends are coming to town just to spend some time together. Dick Kuhn will be staying at his house in Lake Mohawk. D. Wayne Weber and his friend Barbara (Wise) Ward will be with him. I have also learned that my good buddy Judy (Berezin) Whiteman is coming into town and visiting Judy Blust, Ann Ferguson and others I'm sure. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. Most of the above people will be in Tiffin on the 14th or there abouts. Look for them and say hello.

Say hello for me to everyone, since I won't be able to make it to Tiffin this year again. I really miss hanging around and visiting with friends.

Maybe you know of somthing going on that you would like to leave a COMMENT about.?

Of all the things to do in Tiffin in August there is ONE thing you can not foget! and that is a visit to JOLLY'S

Couthouse Update

Kay Heising Huss writes:
Hi, For you out of towners who are interested in the status of the courthouse, it is on the front pages of both the Advertiser and the Toledo Blade. A 3 hr presentation was made by The Seneca County Courthouse and Downtown Redevelopement Group Franklin Conaway. Read all about it at the following websites: Click on the bottom two sites. Drawings of a restored courthouse were also included in the presentation. The bottom line is that it will cost much less to rennovate than to raze and build a new courthouse. The Blade article is better at least in my estimation.

Thanks for the update on the Seneca County Courthouse

Hello Out There!

Hello Out There! I know you’re out there and I know that you are not all taking a nap, well again maybe you are. Wake Up!
I thought I would tell you a little about how this blog works. You don’t have to join anything although maybe some of you already have a google account. You can make comments to any photos of stories by clicking on the comment line under each blog and sign in as anonymous and in the text of your comment type you name so we know who you are. If you would rather email me at sarj@sarjbloom.com please do so. I will publish any story or photo about you, your children, grandchildren, the town, reunions, memories or just about anything that would be of interest to friends, family or classmates. I really think that once we get going this will be a place to share stuff and get to know one another.

Here is an example of a story in the Advertiser Tribune that Jim Wade wanted to share with me via email; so I decided to put it on my Navy Photo site and my Facebook page. Jim as many of you might know was a Photographers Mate in the Navy as was I. Click on the photo of Jim and Sylvia to read about their grandson who is becoming a photographer like his grandpa. Jim is so proud.
